Topics for the preparation of a Master’s Thesis

The postgraduate student is individually required to prepare and successfully defend in public his/her Master’s Degree Thesis after the completion of the 4th semester of studies.

The subject of the thesis must be part of the overall subject of the Postgraduate Programme and in particular the specialization chosen by the student and to make use of the knowledge acquired in the courses of the Programme and in specific applications.

The student has the right to submit the subject of a thesis if he/she has successfully completed all the courses (core and major) of the first two (2) semesters and the undergraduate courses he/she may have to attend by decision of the General Assembly.

Students in the 3rd semester of their studies submit, by the end of the second month of their studies in the specific semester (end of October when the studies in the 3rd semester start in September), a written proposal (Form A: Initial Proposal of the thesis topic) of the topic they are interested in (title, description of the research object, the methodology to be followed and expected results) to the Secretariat of the Postgraduate Programme. At the beginning of the 4th semester of studies, in February, in collaboration with the supervising professor, the final Theme Statement (Form B: Final Thesis Topic Statement) with the final possible structure of the work and a text of up to 2,500 words.

The topics of theses and the supervising professors (A and B supervisors) who support them are validated by the General Assembly.

Form and extent of the Master’s Degree Thesis

The Master’s Degree Thesis can be theoretical, applied or experimental and contain recognizable elements of originality and contribution to scientific knowledge. The text must meet the specifications and structure of scientific work, i.e., include a description of the topic of the work, a description of the findings – results of the work, the methodology, assumptions, bibliography and any other necessary supporting or explanatory elements (figures, diagrams, photos, images, etc.). For each thesis, a short summary of approximately 300 words in Greek and in English or French will be given. The thesis depending on the topic and the objectives it sets can be in other forms, such as drawings (physical or in digital form) or in the form of multimedia combining text, drawings, sound and moving images. In these cases they must be accompanied by a short but detailed text. After consultation with the supervisor, the thesis can be written in another language and include an extended summary in Greek.

Η έκταση της εργασίας μπορεί να είναι από 25.000 – 30.000 λέξεις εκτός και αν η φύση της Μ.Δ.Ε. είναι άλλης μορφής όπως παραπάνω. The length of the work can be from 25,000 to 30,000 words unless the nature of the thesis is of another form as above.

Further details are given in the Students’ Guide and Regulation for the operation of the Postgraduate Programme.
