Student Support – Student Services

Textbooks

Students select one of the textbooks recommended by the lecturer/instructor, which is provided free of charge. The textbooks are approved by the General Assembly of the Department, following a proposal by the lecturer. Applications for textbooks are submitted by students through the Eudoxus system (http://eudoxus.gr).

Catering/Meals/Food

A student canteen operates on the premises of the Faculty of Education to cater to students of the Faculty of Education and the Departments of Medicine and Molecular Biology & Genetics. The right to free meals is granted to students who meet the conditions specified by the decision of the Senate. Students who do not meet the requirements for free meals have the option to dine but are required to pay the meal cost.

Accommodation

Currently, there is no Hall of Residence for the accommodation of students at the Democritus University of Thrace in Alexandroupoli. However, for each academic year, rented rooms are secured in the city of Alexandroupoli and in Nea Chili for student accommodation. The selection criteria for students who will be accommodated in hotels, as well as the rights and obligations of the accommodated students, are applied in accordance with the provisions of the “General Regulations of the Operation of Halls of Residence of the D.U.TH.”

Health Care

Students are entitled to full medical and hospital care. Those who wish to avail themselves of this benefit are granted, upon enrollment, a health card, which is renewed every year. Undergraduate and postgraduate students of Higher Education Institutions (Α.Ε.Ι), national, expatriate, and international students are entitled to healthcare for a period equal to the minimum duration of the undergraduate and postgraduate studies of the Department, increased by half. For the last year of studies, healthcare is extended beyond the end of the academic year until December 31, for those who have not received their degree by then.

Travel Facilities

Students are entitled to a discount on the ticket price for their domestic travels, as follows:

  • In urban public transportation within the city where the Department they are enrolled in is located, by a 50% discount (free transportation on specific routes).
  • In intercity road transportation, by 25%. Additionally, starting from May 13, 2013, there is a 50% reduction in fares for students who hold a travel card in intercity road transportation connecting the school’s location with their place of permanent residence (Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Protocol Number: Φ.5/66409/B3). When traveling, students are required to present their student travel card that they obtain by submitting their application electronically to the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning, and Religious Affairs (http://paso.minedu.gov.gr).

Awards – Scholarships

For undergraduate students, a system of state support is applied, including performance scholarships from the State Scholarships Foundation (Ι.Κ.Υ. https://www.iky.gr/en/). Performance scholarships are granted based on the exclusive criteria of academic performance and the financial situation of the student. More information is provided by the Department’s Secretariat.
